I had my first meeting in Israel with eCommunity – ERP (European Recycling Platform) אקומיוניטי תאגיד חברתי למיחזור פסולת אלקטרונית with it’s CEO Tsachi Ein-Gal @צחי עין גל, and Nirit Shechter. eCommunity – ERP is an e-waste recycling Ltd. with the goal to recognize and certify recycle companies, manufacturers and importers, to operate according to the Electronic Waste laws.

Though the laws against illegal dumping of eWaste in Palestine and Israel are a few years old, there has been very little enforcement of these laws, so illegal dumping of eWaste is still happening with the majority of the dumping into the West Bank territories. In and around these dump sites residents are burning eWaste to extract any valuable commodities to make a few dollars, and for many it’s their primary source of income, while the burning is creating major health issues from all the toxins that are released into the environment.

It doesn’t matter what side of the border the residents live in, Israel or Palestine, it’s the same environment, same air, same water, they are all in danger from the eWaste dumping, and the dumping is not just in landfills, just open your eyes and you’ll see it everywhere.

It’s nice to see some recognition and awareness of these problems (which is why I’m here), but there is a lot of work that needs to happen. The lack of financial resources is one of the big challenges, but there needs to be more awareness and education throughout the region regarding the dangers of these Electronic Waste dumps. Everybody here is at (health and safety) risk if they don’t work together, regardless of who or what they are. This is not a political issue, it’s an environmental issue that will hurt them all the same.

eCommunity is a great organization and Tsachi and Nirit are kind and smart people who are working hard to succeed with the mission to save this environment. I have more meetings and will tour several recycle facilities in Palestine and Israel as well as dump sites to get a better idea of what’s happening here (I’ll take and share pics online). The people I’ve spoken to so far have good intentions and I hope to support them in any way I can. Sustainable Israeli-Palestinian Projects Techno+Rescue
